Ross’s response was exactly the same as Sarah’s. “You what?”

“It has to be this way, Ross.”

“Why?”

Virgil spent nearly ten minutes explaining everything, then finished with, “And since Rosie is out of commission, from a seniority standpoint, you’re next in line. Think you’re up for it?”

“Mayo and Ortiz might not like it.”

“Ah, they won’t care. Besides, I’m hoping it’s temporary. Sarah will be in charge of everything else, so all you have to do is keep doing your job, try to be a little more diplomatic if you can when need be, and everything will be fine.”

“I’ll do whatever you need, Virgil. You know that.”

It didn’t escape Virgil that Ross had managed to pick up Murton’s habit of using his proper name when he wanted to make a point of being heard. “I know you will, kid. I’m proud of you. If I wasn’t, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

“I won’t let you down. You’ve got my word. One question, though.”

“Let’s hear it.”

“If you and Murt are running off the books, and the rest of the crew is, uh, coloring inside the lines, how are we going to communicate and coordinate with each other? Because unless I’m missing something already, we’re both going to be working the same case, just from different angles.”

“You’re not missing anything,” Virgil said. “Murton and I will be giving all our intel to Becky, who will then pass it on to Sarah. As the operations manager of the MCU, Sarah has agreed to reciprocate in kind. My hope is that together we can figure the whole thing out.”

Ross let out a little chuckle. “So the women are in charge now?”

Virgil chuckled right along with him and said, “When were they not? Good luck.” Then he hung up.
